ENGLAND 13v19 IRELAND
Today on March 6th 2004, those who watched this match have witnessed on of rugbys major upsets. Ireland truly deserved to win the match, even the questionable Girvian Dempsey played his part. I start in the pack. The Props where solid, apart from the odd scrum. There lineout work was superb. The Hooker Shane Byrne had a great game, his throwing was spot on bar one incident near there own line and he worked hard. Malcolm OKelly and Paul OConnell outclassed the English. Their lineouts where sublime. Both took on the ball and made the hard yards. Their work rate is what turned the game in Irelands favour. Then an under-rated back row played well above themselves. Glesson tackled well and was everywhere. Foley was brilliant in defense as usual, but gained some hard yards when Ireland needed them most. Then Easterbey who only OSullivan seems to think is any good. He worked hard created an extra lineout option and tackled and carried well. His only mistake was letting in Dawson for his try. Now for the backs. Stringer whos passing was off at times, showed how much he wanted to win. His bravery never leaves him. And when Robinson looked like he was in Stringer caught him with an ankle tap. Ronan O'Gara at out half probably had his best game for Ireland, bar his first missed kick he did all. His kicking into the corners was the platform on which Ireland won the match. Normally I am a critic of OGara but that has changed now. In the centre Gordan Darcy made two important breaks that put Ireland in good attacking position. Brain ODriscoll outside him was probably the only under preformer. He was erratic at times with his kicking and knocked on once or twice in his own half after starting well. His defensive game though was brilliant. On the Wing Tyrone Howe did what he had to he tackled when he had to and gained a few yards when he got the ball. His work in sucking in the men gave Dempsey room to score Irelands only try. Horgan covered well and did his work. Both wingers played as well as they could. Dempsey at Full Back wasnt his usual self. He ran with the ball chased his kicks and was the best I have seen him play in a long while. The only sub was Maggs coming on for Dempsey he slotted in the Centre and hit hard. Ireland now has two brilliant Centres to work off. England didnt get the ball and gave away too many penalties. Dawson amd Lewsey, where the only players who made a mark on the game. As the forwards did little work trying to regain the ball. England returns to Twickenham and lost what a day. Well done Eddie OSullivan whoms tactics worked superbly.
